The Elocutioner Reviews: The Visit

I just want to say from the start, I absolutely loved The Visit! I felt it was masterfully directed, and the story kept me guessing until exactly the moment that they wanted to reveal what was going on. The actors in this movie were some of the best I’ve ever seen, especially Deanna Dunagan, (Nana) I have to say, before seeing The Visit I wondered how they could make a movie about visiting grandparents legitimately scary, but after watching Mrs. Dunagan’s performance I was sold on the idea that yes, grandparents can be terrifying!

I don’t want to give too much away for you, so I will just say that she is a wonderful actress and I hope to see her again in other horror related roles!

But The Visit isn’t all horror either, I watched it in a theater with several other groups of people and there were several times that we were all busting out laughing at the antics of the cast. Mostly because of this guy below, Ed Oxenbould (Tyler).

This is really a perfect example of the kind of comedy I love to see in a horror movie, absolutely hilarious, but without taking away from the terror. The Visit is able to separate the funny moments from the scary ones, and both are top quality. I would recommend this movie if only to show the proper way to inject comedy into horror without making the movie come across as stupid.

My opinion of The Visit:

I absolutely and without reservation recommend this movie! If you are a lover of psychological or suspenseful horror you should go see this movie as soon as possible! I loved watching The Visit so much that I plan to buy the DVD as soon as it becomes available!

10/10

As much as I do love this movie, I do have to give a few warnings to those who would like to see it, but could be sensitive to some content.

I’m going to put the warnings below in case it might give something away to people who absolutely can’t stand spoilers, the warnings are for nudity, suicide, emetophobia, and OCD and fear of germs.

WARNINGS:

Nudity: There are a few naked shots from behind. All you can see is a woman’s posterior, and the scene isn’t vulgar.

Suicide: Without giving anything away, there is one brief image of hanging.

Emetophobia: There is one brief scene of vomiting, lighting is poor and you can’t see detail. You can hear it happening.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder/ Fear of Germs: Soiled diapers are seen several times, and I’m trying not to give anything away while still giving warning, but a character who suffers from OCD is forced to touch a soiled diaper.
