The Elocutioner Reviews: Crimson Peak

It’s not every day I get so excited about a movie that I feel I need to see it in theaters, but my husband and I went out to see Crimson Peak this evening and we were very satisfied with the quality of this movie!

To be honest, we were surprised to learn that Guillermo del Toro directed this movie, because it really wasn’t what I’ve come to expect from his movies. There was a level of intricacy to the story line that I was very impressed with, showing that Del Toro is capable of so much more than the slasher films that seem to saturate the horror genre. Crimson Peak kept me riveted to my seat in a way that few movies can.

In Crimson Peak, we follow the experiences of a young woman who can see the spirits of the dead, and I assumed from the trailer that that would be the sum of the movie; “This ghost is scary”…Cue jump scare… repeat. But if I were to classify this movie, I would honestly say that I think of it as more of a drama than a horror. Sure, the scares are there, but that isn’t the focus of the movie. The focus is on the horrors that we as humans can inflict on one another, all with a smile on our face and convincing our victim that we only have their best interest at heart.

When watching Crimson Peak, go into it with the mindset that you are about to watch an intricate drama which also includes some very interesting scary imagery. But I’m afraid that if you are going into it looking for the horror of the Saw movies, you will be left wanting.

If you liked “The Woman In Black” you would most likely enjoy this movie.

What I thought of Crimson Peak

Quality of the movie itself: 9/10

Scare value: 5/10

Trigger Warnings

As always when there is sufficient material to cause triggering, I’ll leave a brief idea of any possible triggers that I noticed here, and a more detailed description below to avoid giving any spoilers unless you actually want to see them.

Triggers I noticed were: Animal death, incest, and child abuse.

A more in depth description of trigger warnings: Be warned, this will contain spoilers!

Animal Death: A dog is killed with someone’s bare hands. It isn’t shown but you hear it happen.

Incest: You learn near the end of the movie that two important characters are siblings and in a sexual relationship and have been since a young age. It is implied that it began at an age where the youngest sibling was not able to consent.

Child Abuse: Main characters talk about being beaten by an abusive parent and also see the before mentioned information for incest.
